THE AMERICAN CHESTERFIELD OR WAY TO WEALTH
A nice little leatherbound book the full title of which is The American Chesterfield or Way To Wealth Honor and Distinction; Being Selections from the Letters of Lord Chesterfield to His Son and Extracts from Other Eminent Autohors on the Subject of Politeness with Alterations and Additions Suited to the Youth of the United States by a Member of the Philadelphia Bar.  This edition was published in 1827 by John Grigg of No. 9 North fourth Street, Philadelphia.  The book is in excellent condition.  There is an attractively illustrated frontispiece and many other illustrations in the section pertaining to  the carving of different cuts of meat.  It is interesting that someone has early on pasted a title for Byron's Works on the spine of the book.  The page edges of the leather binding are decorated with gilt.  It is really an interesting book having to do with etiquitte but from a man's perspective.   Usually etiquitte books are written for women. There are several pages specifically written for Americans.  The most important items being that they should not chew tobacco while visiting in Europe or lean back on the back two legs of a chair.  Two habits that must have been common in American men during the time period.  The book contains  272 numbered pages.  It measures 3" X 5".
