Amanda Minnie Douglas  (1831-1916),  a long-time Newark resident was a well-known writer of typical late 19th century fiction and poetry.  She was educated in literature and also planning to study art in New York when she was called home because of family finance troubles and to help care for her ailing sister.  She was able to work at her writing at home.  She became a rather prolific author.  She was an influential member of an established woman's literature club.  I can't find a record of her marriage but this book appears to be signed in two places with the name Mrs. A.D. Porter.  One of these signatures is written across the author's name.  Perhaps she was married only a short time?
